Israel’s jails are at bursting point. Since the beginning
of the second intifada the number of Palestinians behind bars
has increased five times. With unprecedented access, the filmmakers
go inside two of the country’s maximum-security prisons,
Be’er Sheva (for men) and Hasheron (for women), where
the inmates have Israeli blood on their hands. They are regarded
by their Israeli guards as the most dangerous terrorists in
custody. Among them, Abdullah Barghouti (Marwan’s cousin)
who has just received the longest sentence ever handed out
by Israeli courts: 67 life sentences, and Amneh Muna, the
woman who lured a 16-year-old Israeli she met on an internet
chat site to Ramallah where he was killed. Scenes from Hasheron
where Muna is elected as the women’s leader are particularly
riveting. Also fascinating are the unexpected discussions
that take place between some Palestinian prisoners and their
guards. Often this is the first time either side has ever
talked to their enemy. Locked up together they share a daily
battle of wits and words that are not without humor or humanity.
But the battle between control and resistance is ever present.
