Sir Simon Rattle, the aerodynamic chief
conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, believes “Music
is not a luxury, but a need, like the air we breathe or the
water we drink.” Rhythm is It! records the 2003 education/outreach
project undertaken by Rattle and the Orchestra to make their
work more accessible. It involves 250 young people from 25
nations (most unfamiliar with classical music), drawn from
some of Berlin’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods, who
collaborate with the Orchestra to create a dance spectacle
based on Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.”
Rehearsing for 45 days under the watchful eye of charismatic
British choreographer Royston Maldoom, the teens make a journey
into new, undreamed-of worlds. This highly kinetic film follows
the project's development and its ups and downs, as well as
the doubts and enthusiasms, uncertainties and changing self-confidence
of the participants. Recorded with a breathtaking fidelity
of sound, this portrait of the fascination of music also clearly
limns the importance of dance, particularly as it imparts
discipline, creativity and personal power. A truly delightful
ode to the transformative power of art.
